When old secrets catch fire, everything will burn.
In a mortal world colonized by the gods and ruled over by the Descended, their cruel offspring, Diem Bellator yearns to escape the insular life of her poor village.
Her mother’s sudden disappearance—and the discovery of a dangerous secret about her past—offer Diem an unexpected opportunity to enter the dark world of Descended royalty and unlock the web of mysteries her mother left behind.
With the dying King’s handsome, mysterious heir watching her every move, and a ruthless mortal alliance recruiting her to join the growing civil war, Diem will have to navigate the unwritten rules of love, power, and politics in order to save her family—and all of mortalkind.
Spark of the Everflame is the first book in The Kindred's Curse Saga, a four-book fantasy romance series. This slow burn, enemies-to-lovers epic is perfect for lovers of magic, dragons, angst, and banter and will appeal to fans of books like A Court of Thorns and Roses, From Blood and Ash, Gild, and The Serpent & the Wings of Night.
My Review
I honestly went into this book with sort of low expectations. I can't even tell you why because this book does not have a low rating on Goodreads.
Spark of the Everflame is a romantasy series that has recently gotten a lot of hype on social media. I think it might have been self-published first... correct me if I am wrong. In this book we follow Diem, a mortal who doesn't necessarily have the appearance of a mortal. Her eye color is completely different than a mortal. She claims that it's from an illness she had as a child.
Her mother is missing and no one seems to know what happened to her. Diem did see her right before she vanished and she was with a strange man, a Descended. I'm still kind of confused about the Descended... I think they are basically fae. Diem is also a healer and gets stuck in a position where she needs to go heal some of the Descended.
That's where she meets Luther, the prince. Luther also happens to be the man that she last saw her mother with. Luther is Descended so she already has no trust in him.
Diem manages to get convinced by her boyfriend, Henry or some shit like that, to join a resistance against the fae/godlike folk. Since she is able to get close to Descended folk, she is perfect for this role. She has mixed feelings on this as she has been trained to not do harm.
My main complaint about this book is how in the world does Diem not realize that she is Descended?? She cannot be that naive. She has different eyes and she's definitely got something else going on in her head that she is blaming on not having the medicine that her mother got for her.
I am loving the pace of the romance that I can tell is going to happen in a later book. I am so excited to see where this is going to take us, especially with that cliffhanger. Henry can go die in a ditch though. And Diem's father... don't get me started on that man.
I truly enjoyed this book. I am so happy that the majority of the books are out in this series. I'm definitely going to see if Penn Cole has more books released because her writing is fantastic.
