Harriet Hatley is the most in-demand wedding photographer in town, but she doesn’t believe in romance, loathes the idea of marriage, and thinks chocolate fountains are an abomination. Which is why, when her long-time partner proposes, she panics. Suddenly Harriet is single… and living down the hall from her ex. She needs a new apartment, like, yesterday.
Enter Cal Clarke, a hopeless romantic who just experienced his own wedding-related disaster. Harriet and Cal are like chalk and cheese, but as they go from strangers to roommates to friends, it becomes clear they’re both running from something. When Harriet’s most heavily guarded secret comes to light, her world implodes. And Cal, with his witty humor and gentle advice, is a surprising source of calm at the center of the storm.
With her career, friendships, and reputation on the line, Harriet must finally face her past in order to take control of her future. Because if she’s willing to stop playing it safe and risk everything to share her truth, real love and happiness may be waiting on the other side…
My Review
This is the book that changed my mind about Mhairi McFarlane. I am starting to think I may have read her earlier books at the wrong time. If I had not liked this one, I was fully prepared to unhaul all of her titles.
I always approached her work assuming it was strictly romance. After reading Jessica’s review on Goodreads, I realized she described the author’s style perfectly. Mhairi’s books focus on character growth rather than romance alone.
With that in mind, I can finally give this book the rating it deserves. Four stars. I truly enjoyed it, even though it did not give me that five star feeling. I have a sense that one day I will find a five star favorite among her books.
I really liked our main character, Harriet. She is a wedding photographer who recognizes that the man she is with is not someone she can imagine spending her life with. She ends the relationship after he publicly proposes in a moment where she felt unable to say no.
After leaving him, she moves into a new home owned by a landlord named Cal. Cal happens to be the groom who recently walked out of a wedding where Harriet was the photographer.
Once she moves in, Harriet finds herself surrounded by more drama than she expected. Her most recent ex shows up and creates a scene, and her abusive ex also comes back into the picture. Through all of this, Cal proves to be a steady and supportive friend who helps her however he can.
For me, this book is ultimately about the strength of women who confront an abuser who has gotten away with far too much. I especially appreciated how the story handled that confrontation.
I enjoyed this book more than I expected, and I am genuinely grateful for that because I really did not want to unhaul a whole stack of books.br />
